IVI Web Forum Question and Answer:
Adapters - which directions are available and planned?

Answered by Kirk Fertitta, Pacific Mindworks
for the
IVI Web Forum

Note:  Offering an IVI driver is a requirement for all LXI-conformant instruments.  The IVI Web Forum is hosted by the IVI Foundation.  You can sign up at www.ivifoundation.org.

Adapters - which directions are available and planned?

If i understand it correctly when using C++: 1. then i can use only IVI-C drivers. 2. when installing the COM-adapter then i can also use IVI-COM drivers 3. there is an .Net-adapter in production for making it possible in future to also use IVI-NET drivers 4. All other directions are not possible (COM -> C, COM - >.NET, NET->C, NET->COM).

No, you can use IVI-COM drivers in C++ perfectly fine. You do not need the IVI-COM adapter. That is specifically for the where you have an NI tool that requires and IVI-C driver and you only have an IVI-COM driver. It's really an adapter for their tooling -- nothing more.

I'm not certain if there is a .NET adapter in production or not from NI. None of the other "directions" you mention actually make sense because all NI is trying to do is adapter a non-IVI-C driver to IVI-C, which their tools know how to load via the IVI-C class drivers. So, there are only directions that are even possible -- 1) the IVI-COM adapter which already exists, and 2) an IVI.NET adapter which perhaps NI will offer.

Hope this helps.
